Rome conquered Greece yet adopted Greek civilization in sense of allowing conquered peoples govern themselves, maintain their cultures, and pursue education. When you think about it, other than the awareness of owing homage to the occupiers, conquered peoples easily thrived economically regardless of military domination by Rome.
But the Romans had no choice. Roman civilization itself was a product of Greek civilization. It was engineering, architectural, and military acumen Romans in addition mostly brought to the table.
If western settlers had been willing to be patient in demonstration of benefits of a knowledge driven civilization, American Indians eventually would have come around as some of their descendants obviously have.
There is no doubt that a knowledge driven civilization is better than any other alternative. How to ensure superiority of knowledge does not induce knowledge driven racism, which provides validation for isolationist and exterminatory strategies must be one of the objectives of current civilization. Western settlers mistreated American Indians primarily because they saw them as barbaric or backward representations of human civilization. It was this view which ensured the profit motive would supersede the humane treatment motive.
The travesty in Myanmar is that there exist a group of people interested in becoming part of a knowledge driven civilization, yet these people are denied the opportunity. Given the profit motive lines up with the humane treatment motive in the case of the Rohingyea, the case of the Rohingyea is nothing but pure let’s maintain our knowledge advantage racism.
