Hi. I stopped attending organized church services about two years ago after chaplaining as a volunteer for 18 months, then merely attending church services for another 12 months at a university owned by a major Christian Denomination. Prior to these events, I had been active in organized church settings ever since I received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior way back in 1990 at the age of 18. The Holy Spirit in essence convinced me I would develop a more effective witness for Jesus Christ outside of organized Church for as long as it would be necessary.
Failure of organized Church has been a fact for me ever since 1990, the year I received Jesus as Lord and Savior. It was not until I read “True Spirituality” by Francis Schaeffer about 1993 that I began to understand how to be a Christian, meaning no one in the organized church I was part of was teaching on “how to be a Christian.” Up until 1993, I had read my Bible constantly yet was not experiencing the Life promised in the Scriptures. After I read True Spirituality I began to realize knowing Jesus is not magic — there is a process to master. I began to understand why God would declare “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” in Hosea 4:6. The fact is if we do not understand the process — our part to play and learn to play that part, we cannot actualize promises of God that relate to joyous, peaceful, productive innovative living. Yet organized church spends all of the time rubbing Christians on the head promising “you will make it in Jesus name.” In my opinion, organized church has metamorphosed into Centers for Weekly Encouragement but No Growth. Growth means you need less of encouragement.
Most of the growth I have achieved has been self taught, wrought out in the spirit through my fellowship with Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I believe I have grown to the extent where I now can draw strength and power directly from Jesus Christ, as such can be trusted to thrive spiritually outside of organized church. Knowing it takes time to develop maturity required for drawing strength while alone with God I do not believe it is my place to encourage anyone else to vacate organized church. Each person led of the Holy Spirit I believe will arrive at such a decision on their own. But if most Christians are not even aware of lifelessness that pervades church, well I guess we can pray for their eyes to be opened.
I know the Scriptures declare we can all be taught directly of the Holy Spirit. As I have discussed in the preceding, this in fact has been my experience. It is a fact, however, that our Heavenly Father desires organized church to be filled with Spirit filled teachers who are able to guide believers into how to activate all that it means to have faith in Jesus Christ (2Timothy 2:2; Ephesians 4:11–13). It is a travesty that organized church nowadays does anything but teach how to know Jesus Christ — knowledge Jesus declares in John 17:3 is essence of eternal life. And when a person shows up who tries to teach, well those who live off being important in church get their feathers all ruffled, and huffing and puffing, mother hen the righteous offender out of church. Like the Apostle Paul says in 2Corinthians 6:8, “We are treated as impostors yet are true.”
I first came in contact with Nature of the Beat who referred me to the Done With Religion profile. It feels good to know I am not alone in this drive of the Holy Spirit to nurture believers in Jesus Christ outside of organized church.
I look forward to having fellowship with other believers who have decided to nurture their faith in the name of Jesus Christ outside of organized church services.
I write on Christian themes here on Medium. I, however, also write on topics of general interest with a view to influencing people towards things that are good, noble etc. My style may be edgy at times, but the goal is to catch people’s attention and hopefully impact them positively with essence of a piece authored by me. There are too many voices attempting to lead people astray into burdensome living for Christians whom God has taught and empowered such as myself to leave all the talking to non-Christians. If we can get people falling in love with principles that make for joyous, peaceful, productive living, we have gotten them moving towards Jesus Christ.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with us and bring to us promised peace that surpasses understanding in Jesus name. Amen.
