There is a common misconception that in its very essence, faith is dichotomous from reason. Within this context, man has to abdicate his mind for arrival at beliefs, for arrival at faith. This view of faith is a gross misconception.
Take carbon dating. The same process which establishes the earth is millions of years old provides validation for purported or implied timing of writing of Christian Scriptures, the Bible. At present time, there does not exist any doubt whatsoever within scientific communities that Christian Scriptures are as old as purported by internal historical evidence within the Bible. This validation of timing of writing of Old and New Testament Scriptures of the Bible is evidence over which faith can reason in the following sense. When the Bible declares in Genesis Chapter One that there exists spectrums of light other than those which emanate from the sun we have confidence those words were penned way before science produced evidence of validity of the assertion. When Daniel in Book of Daniel declares order of world dominance from the Babylonians to the Medo-Persians, to the Greeks, to the Romans, and to a segmented Europe and world, we have confidence those words were penned way before occurrence of the political events.
In so far as carbon dating is concerned, it is important to note dating of the age of the earth and dating of Christian Scriptures yield compatible evidence. Given Genesis Chapter 1 declares the earth existed already prior to creation of Adam and Eve or Garden of Eden (Genesis 1:1), and given all scientific evidence — historical, archaeological, or carbon dating agree intellectual man (man who demonstrates capacity to write) is less than 6,000 years old, there does not exist any discrepancy between dating of the earth to be millions of years old, dating of Christian Scriptures, and dating of intellectual activity on earth. This consistency is powerful evidence for validity of Christian Scriptures.
In Isaiah 1:18, God calls out to man saying,
“Come now, let us reason together…”
If the God of the Bible, Creator of heaven and earth is willing to reason with man, willing to engage in conversation so man can see His point of view, there is no way the same God dissociates faith from reason. With this God, faith reasons, faith reasons over evidence, faith makes a jump from evidence to acquisition of beliefs. Faith has capacity for stating of reasons for beliefs, does not just throw its hands in the air declaring, “I just believe.”
