Eternity of Utopia

Some days augur all dark and bleak
All around dreary, grey, dark, and bleak
People once thought heroes now worse than villains
What once we thought love now no more than self
Tis not in my life so much I see
But a world so full of it, so full of scum, so full of pain
But then again some days with cheer are filled
Past clouds through rays of shine I find am able to see
There’s light in my eyes, lightness in my steps, lilt in my voice
Those who know me well hazard a guess
“He’s about mastered something new” they surmise
If joy we derive from mastery —
of what is good, noble, right, excellent
If joy we derive not from misery of others
If others’ joy ours we count as well
Fewer days of dreary, grey, and bleak we see
Eternity of utopia well within our reach
