If you turn on a conventional oven that is gas powered, you turn the knob, and select a temperature, typically somewhere between 300 and 450 degrees. You wait for the oven to power up to your choice of temperature, place the item you want to cook or bake in the oven, set the time, then wait. If your oven is configured exactly as those of a thousand of your neighbors, the item that you bake or cook will come out about exactly the same as those of those other thousand neighbors. If you bake the same item a thousand items, it will come out about exactly the same every single time.
The oven? made by man. The gas that powers the oven, that makes the oven work the same every single time, and properties of the gas? Only discovered by man, always had been in existence while man lived in caves, feasted on beets, and risked his life killing mammoths for food, all of that when instead, he could have had oven baked cakes and oven roasted lamb.
Suppose your oven is powered by electricity. Well, Faraday discovered electricity, meaning electricity already existed, only was discovered by Faraday. We arrive then, yet again at the inference that the most important ingredient for working of the electric oven — electricity — was not created by man, only is discovered and harnessed by man.
Whether it be the law of gravity (as it applies, for instance, to aeroplanes) or laws of motion (as applies, for instance, to cars) or law of relativity (as applies, for instance, to space travel) there is nothing new that is produced by man that, in entirety, is creation of man. Quite the contrary, every new principle or gadget that is produced by man evinces discovery of a principle that always had been, but yet, hitherto had remained hidden to consciousness of man.
Perhaps, your mind wonders about the internet and the cell phone. Well, the internet, the land line, and the cell phone, all made possible by electromagnetic waves. Did man invent electromagnetic waves? Absolutely not! Electromagnetic waves always have been, only have been discovered, then harnessed by man for enhancement of enjoyment of life on earth.
Whenever we assert that man is creative, in reality, we assert that man has capacity for discovery of principles that, hitherto, had been hidden, but which somehow via exercise of effort born out of either of need or curiosity, are inferred, then harnessed. In respect of ‘necessity’ as source of discovery of new inventions, I always have believed that only either of a married man or a single mother could have come up with the vacuum cleaner.
Regardless of domicile of inventions or principles in realms of Science, Engineering, Medicine, Mathematics, Economics, Finance, or any other discipline, all have exactly the same character, namely, discovery of principles that always had been, that are harnessed for enhancement of enjoyment of life.
Whenever we assert that man creates, in reality, we assert that man discovers, and harnesses principles that always have been for enhancement of enjoyment of life on earth.
Whether or not you believe in existence of ‘God’, you ought to be thankful that all of the principles that are discovered were created alongside the mass of dirt and water that is planet Earth.
In presence of evidence that principles of physics that undergird life on earth always have been, Einstein declared it was impossible for the universe not to have been produced by some intelligent mind. What simultaneously seemed impossible was the possibility that such an intelligent mind would have interest in relationship with His creation, that is, man.
Whether, or not the intelligent mind that is source of all of the beneficial principles that have been discovered desires relationship with you and I, clearly it cannot hurt to whisper a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to that intelligent mind for all of the resources provided, every once in a while.
If we agree to refer to the intelligent mind that is source of the universe as ‘God’, clearly, it cannot hurt to say ‘thank you, God’ every once in a while.
But is it possible that the intelligent mind that is source of the universe is able to hear ‘thank you’s uttered by man?’
Friend, that intelligent mind created electromagnetic waves and light waves, and sound waves that travel at unbelievably unimaginable speeds. The cellphone and infrastructure that support its use only facilitate harnessing of electromagnetic waves that carry your voice to whomever it is that you speak. It is the electromagnetic waves that make your cell phone possible, not the casing you hold in your hand, or the infrastructure that support it. The technology in the casing and the infrastructure only harness the waves, are not source of the waves.
If the intelligent mind whose electromagnetic waves enable you speak with your family member who is 10,000 miles away cannot Himself hear whenever you whisper a ‘thank you’, this while you live in atmosphere of electromagnetic waves, clearly we arrive at some sort of unbelievable contradiction. In presence of the evidence, that is, what man has actualized using electromagnetic waves that are created by God, the only conclusion that is rational is, if you whisper, ‘thank you God’ surely He hears.
Christian beliefs assert God created the earth out of desire for relationship with man. If that indeed is true, clearly, it will be difficult to discover if indeed it is so if we are not willing, every once in a while to whisper:
‘thank you God for all of the wonderful principles that you have put in place, which, upon our discovery, enhance our enjoyment of life on earth’.
A Farmer in Tennessee expressed an heartfelt ‘thank you’ to God beautifully as follows, way back in 1933:
